Victoria to bid for NRL grand final
The Victorian Government has rejected suggestions landing the NRL grand final could have a negative impact on the AFL’s blockbuster day.
Melbourne is poised to battle Brisbane for the right to host the rugby league decider in 2017, 2018 and 2019 while Sydney’s Olympic stadium undergoes a makeover.
Sports Minister John Eren said on 3AW it would be another coup for the ‘world’s sporting capital’ but admitted he was yet to speak with AFL chief Gillon McLachlan about the idea.
Victoria’s native football code traditionally hosts its grand final on the same weekend as the NRL.
But Mr Eren said he didn’t expect any issues.
‘I don’t see that happening,’ he said.
‘I see a blockbuster weekend of sport.
‘They know, just as every other code knows, that the MCG is the people’s ground and we’ll make full use of it when we have the opportunity.
‘What a blockbuster weekend of sport it would be to have the AFL grand final on the Saturday and the NRL grand final on the Sunday.’
