Article image for ‘I’m sorry’: Daniel Andrews fronts hotel quarantine inquiry

Daniel Andrews has apologised to “every member of the Victorian community” while fronting the hotel quarantine inquiry.

But state opposition leader Michael O’Brien has told 3AW Drive Victorians don’t want an apology, they “want answers”.

The Premier told the inquiry he did not know who made the decision to use private security in the quarantine hotels but said somebody should know the answer.

“Mistakes have been made in this (hotel quarantine) program and answers are required,” he told the inquiry.

“The mistakes are unacceptable to me.

“I want to make it very clear to each and every member of the Victorian community that I am sorry for what has occurred here.”

But that didn’t wash with his political rival.

3AW state political reporter James Talia said it was hard to see the inquiry making a cutting decision on responsibility, given the lack of clear evidence, but health minister Jenny Mikakos was now under incredible pressure.

“It may be regarded as subtle, but the Premier put Jenny Mikakos under the bus this afternoon, make no mistake about that, at all,” he said.

Michael O’Brien said she should be sacked.

“These people couldn’t lie straight in bed,” he said.
