AFL likely to alter shotclock rule

Article image for AFL likely to alter shotclock rule

The AFL is set to introduce a deterrent for a time wasting player who is using the shotclock to his advantage.

North Melbourne’s Mason Wood purposely waited until his allocated 30-second set shot time counted down, which happened to coincide with the final siren.

The result confirmed a narrow win for the Kangaroos over St Kilda, however AFL Operations Manager Mark Evans has since confirmed he did not like the ‘look’ of it.

One option the AFL is considering is to allow the umpire to call play on if the player’s body language clearly suggests he is wasting time.

‘I think you’re entitled to prepare yourself for the shot at goal the best way you can,’ Evans said on Sports Today.

‘But that wouldn’t include standing with your hand on your hip staring at the scoreboard.’
