RTBU calls for C-Class trams to be taken off tracks after Kew crash
The Rail Tram and Bus Union says the type of tram which derailed last night at Kew should be taken out of service until a thorough investigation is completed.
Phil Altieri from the RTBU told Neil Mitchell there’d been ‘nothing but trouble’ with C-Class trams since their introduction.
‘There’s been a whole host of problems, it’s not just about derailment,’ he said on 3AW Mornings.
‘These trams have injured 20 plus drivers.’
Mr Altieri said he’d never seen anything like Monday night’s derailment in his 40 years in the industry.
But Yarra Trams has denied Mr Altieri’s claims.
‘This derailment is an isolated incident and occurred as a result of a head-on collision with a vehicle,’ a spokesperson said.
‘The type of tram is irrelevant.
‘All trams that operate on Melbourne’s tram network are safe.’
