’20 per cent in five years’: State government under fire for increasing Myki fares during cost of living crisis
The State government has received criticism following an announcement Myki fares will be rising from New Years Day.
Spokesperson for Public Transport Users Association, Daniel Bowen, says fares have gone up 20 per cent in the last five years.
“There’s been some relief for V/Line customers which was welcome, but for those of us travelling around Melbourne, the cost does go up, that is applying pressure to many households who don’t necessarily have spare cash to burn,” he told 3AW Drive.
Press PLAY to hear how much it’s thought the fares could increase by
The government has also received criticism for not revealing how much the fares would increase by.
“CPI rises are typical, but of course, it’s really up to the government, if they want to go ahead with that,” he said.
